The Badlands and the Black Hills

We start off our trip with a quick visit to Winona, Minnesota, a small town overlooking the Mississippi. Like a lot of river cities, it’s an a mix of ugly suburban tract development houses and some beautifully restored buildings from the turn of the century—16 of the latter are recognized by the national Register of Historic Places.

This is the H. Choate and Company building, an example of the Romanesque style. It dates backs to 1888 and was designed by C.A. Dunham.
